Bill’s mother Bess, celebrating her 98th birthday January 1, 2005 at El Ranchito, her favorite Mexican restaurant. She has outlived two husbands but gave up driving her Lincoln Town Car at age 95. She shows off her green thumb by growing luscious vegetables, roses, lilies and assorted other flowers. She entertains all who meet her with tales of growing up in a log cabin the North Carolina mountains, and she claims to have prayed Bill and Charlanne together. Bess is now happily living in an assisted living center 10 minutes from Bill and his sister Gloria.
Charlanne’s parents, Weldon (W4AJT to you "hams") and "Mickey" Fields, live in Greensboro next door to Charlanne’s brother, "Buddy," and his wife Peggy. At ages 90 and 93, respectively, these two amaze all by continuing to spend summer weekends at Badin Lake, where Weldon leads the singing and Mickey plays the organ at the Bender Outdoor Worship Center, the upshot of a Sunday School the Fields family founded 50 years ago!
Bill’s daughter Lisa and her husband Ben were married on November 2, 2003. Lisa graduated a few years ago from UNC-Chapel Hill with a major in Communications, and she was lucky enough to land her first job as a Communications Director in New York City just after graduating. She and Ben met on a Caribbean cruise with Bill and Charlanne and it was literally love at first sight!
Thanks to all for your faithful prayers: On Feb. 28, 2005, Christian returned home safely from a year's service in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He traveled more than 8,000 miles all over the country, driving and maintaining Army vehicles, including those huge HETs, and was awarded a Bronze Star for heroism in combat. We are SO proud! Since returning home, he has been living at the Fields' Badin Lake house and has taken the position of Youth Director at our church (Chandler's Grove UMC). In August he entered Wake Forest Divinity School in Winston-Salem, in preparation for accepting God's call to the ministry. Not long ago came the call Christian had been waiting for--he was asked to deliver the sermon at our church on Sunday, June 11, 2006. In May, Charlanne was thrilled to be asked to join a Contemporary Christian
quartet, "Wing and A Prayer." Already, singing with this special
group has been an enormous blessing to both of us. Bill is a great
supporter, and along with helping set up and take down equipment, is often
called upon to use his sonorous speaking voice to read scripture to accompany
our songs. For more, click here.
